Non Traditional Weddings Are Increasingly Popular

For many people, getting married should follow a well worn script.  It should take place in a church, synagogue, or other religiously consecrated building.  It should be performed by a member of the clergy.  It should be a formal occasion, with the bride in a dress costing thousands of dollars and the groom in an expensive tuxedo.  This is the traditional, story book wedding, and it’s the choice of millions of people who get married every year.  And there’s certainly nothing wrong with that.  But for a growing number of people, non traditional weddings are becoming the way to go when they get married.

There are a lot of reasons for this.  One of them is that, while most Americas still practice one form of religion or another, many people don’t, and they find it odd that they should be requesting the blessing of an organization they don’t believe in, just because it’s tradition.  In other cases, the bride and groom have different religions, and so they prefer a non traditional wedding to avoid conflicts.  This isn’t to say that a non traditional wedding can’t be religious; it certainly can.  There are a lot of elements that go into a traditional wedding, and religion is only one of them.

Another reason more and more couples are forgoing the standard wedding ceremony has to do with money.  Traditional weddings are very expensive, and the cost just seems to go up every year.  For many couples thinking of getting married, spending all that money on the ceremony is a tremendous waste of resources, even if they’re not paying for it themselves.  So they prefer a smaller, less formal, more intimate wedding ceremony, because to them, it’s all about the life long commitment to each other, not spending thousands of dollars for a big, traditional wedding.

And there are a host of other reasons why people are choosing these days to get married in a non traditional way.  Each reason is as unique as the couple themselves, and no bride or groom should ever let someone else dictate the manner in which they commit their life to another person, nor should they let anyone look down on them for not doing it the usual way.
